New article published in the Journal of Medical Internet Research (JMIR)

The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in medicine represents a groundbreaking shift in healthcare, offering potential improvements in diagnostics, treatment planning, and patient care. Thus, understanding AI research's evolution, focus, and trajectory in medicine is crucial for future developments. The resulting clear picture of the AI landscape in medicine can guide researchers and policymakers in identifying gaps and directing future efforts. To address this, the question arises: How has AI research in medicine evolved, and what are its key focus areas?

Jin Shi, Prof. Dr. David Bendig from the Institute for Entrepreneurship, Prof. Dr. Horst Christian Vollmar from the Institute of General Practice and Family Medicine, Ruhr University Bochum, and Prof. Dr. Peter Rasche from the Department of Healthcare, University of Applied Science - Hochschule Niederrhein, are investigating this question in their current study "Mapping the Bibliometrics Landscape of AI in Medicine: Methodological Study". The study was recently published in the Journal of Medical Internet Research, a world-leading medical informatics and internet research journal. Utilizing a computer-aided bibliometrics analysis and topic modeling, the study provides a comprehensive overview of AI research in medicine from 2000 to 2022. By analyzing a substantial number of articles from PubMed and employing methods like latent Dirichlet allocation for topic modeling, the study delineates the key areas and trends in medical AI research, offering insights into its evolution and future directions.
