Housing
The housing choices for students in Münster are diverse. Further information about all possible accommodation facilities is composed here on the site of the International Office. Rooms in student dormitories have the advantage of being less expensive than private accommodations, and they are normally fully or partially furnished. The 21 dorms are equipped with washing machines and cloth dryers. All 6,000 rooms are prewired for telephone and internet connections, as well as for cable television.
Online housing applications, available at the homepage of the Student Services, should be filled out as soon as possible before the beginning of the semester. The contact person for international students is:
Ms. Christiane Herding
Student Services (Studentenwerk) - Housing
Bismarckallee 5 - Room 0.07
E-Mail: christiane.herding@studentenwerk-muenster.de
Telephone +49 (2 51) 83 - 7 96 46
You can submit your housing application online. Please fill out the online application form and send it via email to Ms. Herding at Student Services. Applications for the Winter Semester must be handed in by June 15th at the latest, and applications for the Summer Semester must be handed in by December 15th at the latest. To sign a lease, Student Services requires the following documents:
- Photo
- Certificate of Enrolment or a Copy of the Letter of Admission (for new students)
- Passport with a Valid Visa/Residency Permit (for international applicants)
- Bank Account in Germany
Student Services will make every effort to reserve a dorm room for you and to send you a lease, which you must sign and return to Student Services within the specified period. From experience, we know that Student Services usually sends the lease contracts quite late. If you have concerns or questions about your housing, please contact the housing department at Student Services directly. The contact person is Ms. Christiane Herding, phone: (0251) 83-79646.
Of course, private accommodations in Münster offer an alternative to housing provided through Student Services. However, it is often rather difficult to find an apartment, especially when you are trying to conduct your housing search from abroad. If you plan to spend more than one semester in Münster, then you can certainly look around for a new apartment after your first couple of weeks in Münster. However, please remember: If you sign a lease for a dorm room, you are not allowed to break your lease prematurely. You have to pay your rent until the end of the time period specified in the lease.
International exchange students who only intend to stay for one or two semesters may find the following offer appealing: Every semester the ERASMUS team collects a list of Münster students who are going abroad and subletting their rooms in a shared apartment. These vacant rooms are advertised in the forum on the webpage: http://www.erasmus-muenster.de/.
There are different options, as well:
- apartment listings in the very popular student magazine na dann (published every Wednesday)
- WG-gesucht.de
- Studenten-wg.de
- private dormitories or housing affiliated with churches
- the AstA room exchange
- Moneto Guide "Renting a home in Germany"
Important: Within one week, every resident is obligated to register his or her current address with the city of Münster (at the Citizens Office or at the Foreigners' Registration Office).
